Walk 1 - Fingest - Hanger Wood - Turville

2.5 miles. OS Explorer Map 171, map ref: 777911.

This walk starts off at Fingest, by the church with the saddle back roof. It takes a path north through Hanger Woods, then south-west, coming down past Cobstone Mill into Turville, then returning east to Fingest. There are a number of medium gradients and one steep descent (Cobstone hill ). There are lovely views over the Hambledon valley.

If you are driving, having arrived in Fingest, take the road opposite the Chequers pub and park on the left by the church yard.

A

Walk up this road, away from the junction, a short way and turn right up the footpath just after the half timbered Church Cottage. Follow the narrow footpath, to where it divides and climb over the stile to take the left path. Follow the fenced path between the fields, looking back for the view of the church and valley towards Skirmett and Hambledon. Pass through a metal gate and continue uphill to the entrance to Hanger Woods. There's a seat with a view by this entrance.

Continue straight on the footpath through the woods, up a fairly gentle hill and over the brow until you reach some rustic wooden signs either side, one with directions and one with some history of the woods.

B

Turn left at this point and follow the marked footpath, which slopes downhill, getting steeper as you near the edge of the woods. Go through the wooden gate to the field and enjoy the panoramic views of the valley. Continue straight down the side of the field to the small road at the bottom. Turn right along the road for a short distance then left at the Bridlepath and Footpath signs.

C

Continue straight until you see a metal gate into a field, with a stile to its left. It's the left one of two paths at this point. Cross this stile and continue straight across the meadow and into the woods. Continue straight on the path through the woods, then through a small left then right 'S' and continue up the hill to the road. At this point the sails of Cobstone Mill come into view. Turn right on the road for a short distance, then left just after the buildings. Follow the path, with the windmill close by on your left, through the gap in the hedge. The path curves round to the left, through another gap, then right, then steeply straight downhill (Cobstone Hill) towards the pretty village of Turville.

D

As you reach the gates at the bottom of the hill, the path returning to Fingest is through the gate on the left. It is, however, well worth diverting straight on for a look around the village of Turville, with its picturesque old cottages, Bull and Butcher pub and interesting church (take a look inside if possible, particularly the tomb). Return to point 'D.'

Go through the gate towards Fingest. Cross the field to the stile, looking up to your left for a great view of the windmill. Cross the stile into the gap in the trees and continue along the narrow path to a road. Go straight across the road, through the wooden gate and continue straight for a short distance along the wide path, then follow it round to the right. You may catch sight of the familiar Fingest church tower at this point. Continue to the road and turn left along the verge. Enter the churchyard on the left, continue towards the church, then follow the path right to where your car is parked at 'A.'.
